My Autonomous Desk (basic) Has Arrived! (Standing Desk, motorized)

By , August 12, 2015

Yes, folks, they really did deliver the adjustable-height “Autonomous Desk (basic)” that I backed via Kickstarter (photos + video, below).

Assembly was a little easier than I expected, though certainly not trivial.

And it works: after setting the memory, I could push any button and the desk height changes, slowly, smoothly, and quietly.

Here are the pictures from delivery through unpacking, and then the assembled desk.  At the bottom is an MP4 video.

Question – just how sturdy/stable is the table at full height. In my case it will not be against a wall and will be free standing in an office. Thank you.

Although I have my desk quite near the wall (about 2 inches clearance), I’d be very concerned if it ever touched the wall; the desk (or monitor arm) might gouge the wall when I push the button to raise or lower it.

It is quite sturdy; in a Kickstarter comment the maker says “the desk can hold up to 350 pounds.” I’m not entirely comfortable with that number (which seems high; I’m also not sure if that includes the 50-pound weight of the desktop itself.)

My desk currently lifts itself plus a 29″ monitor, my laptop computer, two power strips, the under-desk baskets, and a riser. I am pretty confident I could double or triple that load (certainly a second monitor and standard desktop CPU). I think 100-120 pounds would be no problem.

Hi! I’m just about to order an autonomous desk. Is there any wobble when typing (I type hard and fast)? Does the monitor (on the monitor arm) shake when typing hard and fast? Thanks, Cooper.

  4. Mark Welch says:

I was going to say “no” but then I noticed on Sunday that there is a slight jiggle if I type hard. It would probably be less if the desk is on a solid surface (mine is on carpet).

Quick question, is this the basic business class one? I have two monitors and plan on using them both of course while playing. Want to be sure that it will hold a 24 and a 27 inch monitor side by side.

    Hi Mark,

Did you receive both boxes at the same time? So far I’ve only received the desktop, an I am awaiting the box containing the adjustable legs. I wanted to see if anyone else has had the same issue. Thanks!

  7. Mark Welch says:

Yes, I found both on my doorstep on the same afternoon. If I recall correctly, it was either the same tracking code, or only one box had the tracking code.
